It's not every day that a 27-year-old announces their retirement from the NHL, but that's exactly what a former Montreal Canadiens goalie just did.

The Canadiens signed McNiven to an entry-level contract in 2015, which was the beginning of his seven professional years in North America. McNiven played five seasons with the Habs before being traded to the Calgary Flames in 2022 for future considerations. After only 19 days, the Flames traded him to the Ottawa Senators, once again for future considerations.
The good news for McNiven is that he is going to be remaining around the sport he loves, as he's just signed on to be the assistant coach of the BCHL's Powell River Kings.
We are thrilled to announce the hirings of Christopher Klack and Michael McNiven as assistant coaches!
"My goal is to create an environment where our players have the best possible chance to succeed both mentally and physically." says McNiven "Having played in all three levels of professional hockey in North America, I am well versed in the demands and challenges our team will face. I am committed to bringing my utmost effort and expertise to win a Fred Page Cup."

McNiven's NHL career didn't go quite as planned, as he never started a game, and only ever played in one period, coming in relief for Habs Cayden Primeau. In his one period of NHL action, McNiven let in three goals on seven shots. The Habs lost 8 to 2.
