After another disappointing end to their season, the Maple Leafs faced the media on Monday, and one Mitch Marner comment has opened up some intriguing possibilities.

Whether fair or not, Mitch Marner is seemingly being made out as the scapegoat in Toronto after another poor playoff run, and he made several interesting comments during his media availability. He did point out that his goal was to remain in Toronto, but a following comment has been pointed out by several reporters as potentially being willing to waive his no-movement clause.
"You saw with the Raptors a couple years ago, the love (the fans) still have for a lot of those players that they had to trade off this year, and that's kind of the love you want.»
Marner referenced players like OG Anunoby, Kawhi Leonard and Pascal Siakham who were all traded from the Toronto Raptors, and because of their willingness to help the team, they were treated as heroes upon return.
The sentiment was perfectly put into words in the replies on social media;
Here's the thing with Marner and it sucks because he's talented.

If he agrees to waive to a spot he wants, the fanbase will appreciate him for it and he will be welcomed back. Make a mess? He could be a villain in his hometown, forever. No one would/should want that.
There are reportedly several teams that would take a look at Marner if he waives his NMC on the final year of his contract, and while fans will certainly cool down plenty after the playoff disappointment, moving on may simply be the best thing for him.
