The Winnipeg Jets might be forced to trade forward Nikolaj Ehlers. Ehlers is entering the final year of his $42 million contract, and the team needs to decide whether to keep him or trade him to free up cap space.

Ehlers had a solid season last year with 25 goals and 61 points in 82 games, but his history of injuries is a concern. Insider Jason Gregor added more fuel to the fire.
the Jets want to get quicker or remain one of the faster teams, trading Nikolaj is tricky

The Jets signed their man to a seven-year deal in 2017 after he had back-to-back 60-point seasons, but he's only hit that mark once since then.
Nikolaj Ehlers will be a UFA next year, unless he signs a new deal. And I'm really curious about his future. Ehlers has been an elite offensive winger at 5-on-5 since ~2019. I think Winnipeg can't afford to lose him for nothing next year.
Now, as his contract nears its end, he might be looking for a four-year deal, but the Jets probably won't offer $6 million AAV again.
He is a guy who, when healthy, can score 30 goals. He is very hard to replace, but he could be a good trade piece if you are looking for a top-four defenseman if that's indeed what Kevin Cheveldayoff is looking for

A smart GM will trade for Nikolaj Ehlers with an extension in the off-season. It's obviously that Winnipeg doesn't deserve player like him. Ehlers has been an elite winger at 5-on-5 for many years already, in our opinion.
A five-year deal with an average annual value (AAV) of around $4 million could be more realistic.
Nikolaj Ehlers has not indicated that he wants to leave the organization either. So, I think he gets extended this offseason.

It's in the Jets' best interest to sort out a deal with Ehlers quickly if they want to keep him. This will help them plan their salary cap plan beyond the 2024-25 season.
