Mitch Marner is one of the most-talked-about players in the NHL right now regarding trade deals. Following a less-than-impressive showing in the Stanley Cup playoffs, many analysts and insiders have suggested that the player may be on his way to Vegas a year before his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs expires.
Despite the number of teas showing interest in a trade deal, little is known about what is happening behind the scenes. The Toronto Maple Leafs have only shared that they are not fully committed to trading nor retaining the player for the upcoming season.
Despite this coy behavior from Toronto, Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli remains convinced that Marner could be headed elsewhere in the next year. Seravalli also named a possible replacement: Carolina Hurricanes forward Jake Guentzel, who has the eyes of several other teams.
Jake Guentzel had a solid season, posting 30 goals and 47 assists in 67 games; not a far cry from the 26 goals and 59 assists Mitch Marner made in his 69 games during the regular season. However, the players shoot from opposite sides, making this, perhaps not the best direct replacement. Whatever the outcome, we can expect both players to serve a major role in their next home in the NHL.
