Bruins Struggle with Salary Cap

After an exceptional season that earned him the Vezina Trophy and with a relatively low salary of $5 million a year, Ullmark naturally attracted attention from teams across the NHL.
The Bruins, who were in a tight spot with their salary cap, likely refused offers from multiple teams for Ullmark's services. Ty Anderson, an insider, discussed the situation on 98.5 The Sports Hub:
"Knowing their cap situation and how they had to ditch money, teams were eager to rip the Bruins off at every stop and turn. (The fact that they didn't have to throw in a pick to get rid of Taylor Hall's $6 million salary is probably a miracle, though it explains why the Bruins received two minor-league defensemen in exchange for Hall.) Ullmark also had considerable trade protection, with a no-trade clause that required his consent to be traded to about half the league."

The teams sensed that the Bruins were under financial pressure and were ready to capitalize on the situation.

Did Ullmark Reject a Trade?

As per Anderson's insights, Boston may have received a fair offer for Ullmark, but executing the trade would have necessitated Ullmark's consent due to his no-trade clause.
"My understanding and this is through some backchannel rumblings and conversations, so take it with a grain of salt, of course is that there was one team out there who had interest in giving Sweeney and the Bruins what you would consider a fair, market value return for Ullmark. But that trade would have required a corresponding trade that never happened, and it would have also required Ullmark agreeing to waive his no-trade clause."

Though the deal on the table seemed fair, Ullmark declined to waive his no-trade clause. The speculation is that he had reservations about joining a team that's not performing well.
In our opinion, retaining Ullmark was the right call for the Bruins, as he remains a key factor in keeping the team competitive.
