Since then, the Boston Bruins have had a difficult time coming to terms with Jeremy Sayman, who was expected to become the starting goaltender for the team. Though significant time has passed since the trade went down, this has led many fans to question why the trade was made so hastily. Luckily, Elliotte Friedman has finally answered these interrogations. In a recent edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, he shared that Linus Ullmark could update his no-trade list on July 1st, possibly hurting the team's chances of getting a good deal for the former Vezina Trophy winner. By sending him away on June 24th, they guaranteed their initial plans with Ottawa could occur, and though he could not confirm this, it seems to be a safe bet.
"I had some people who ask me about that too, is 'Why would they have made the Ullmark deal without uh signing Swayman?' I think my theory on that is, and again it's my theory, is that you'll remember the Ullmark trade was right before July 1st[...]
Ullmark could have switched the teams on his list, and at that point in time they could trade Ullmark to Ottawa without asking him, and if you go to July 1st, what happens if Ullmark switches his list? So my guess is that had everything to do with why that happened at that time."
There is no question that there are times to play it safe on a trade, and in most cases, sending Linus Ullmark off to the Ottawa Senators before he could update his no-trade list would have been exactly the right move. However, since the Boston Bruins are still embroiled in stiff contract negotiations with Jeremy Swayman, it may end up biting them back tenfold. Hopefully, both parties can come to a decision before too long, or the Boston Bruins can have much greater troubles in the near future.
