The Buffalo Sabres came close to trading Jack Eichel to the Ottawa Senators, but the deal fell apart due to the Sabres' insistence on receiving an untouchable player in return.

Details of the Unsuccessful Eichel Trade

Recently, a social media post revealed the trade conditions the Buffalo Sabres had presented to the Ottawa Senators for Jack Eichel.

While the exact trade details remain undisclosed, it's clear that the offer extended beyond just Sanderson's involvement. The finalized Eichel trade brought Alex Tuch, Peyton Krebs, a 1st-round pick, and a 2nd-round pick to Buffalo in exchange for Eichel and a third-round pick.

Sanderson Analysis

In his debut NHL season, 21-year-old Jake Sanderson exhibited remarkable potential. His impressive stats, including 32 points over 77 games, showcased not only offense but also defense. Notably, within the Senators' struggling defensive lineup, Sanderson stood out as the second-best defensive defenseman, trailing only Artem Zub.
Given his age, Sanderson's capacity for growth remains substantial, positioning him to become a pivotal top-pairing defenseman and a future leader for the Senators.
Although the addition of Jack Eichel as a first-line center would undoubtedly strengthen the Senators' roster, the ascent of Tim Stützle has seemingly alleviated the team's long-term need for Eichel's role. By keeping Sanderson, we won't get to see Stutzle and Eichel play together but thankfully the Senators have plenty of elite forwards.
