The Calgary Flames have made a big move just weeks away from the start of the new season. The team has done something many of their fans have been waiting for in re-signing veteran Mikael Backlund to a new deal, with the team deciding to hand him a huge honour in the process.
New Deal
First off, Backlund, 34, has inked a new two-year deal worth $4.5 million per season. In addition, Backlund has been named the 21st captain of the Calgary Flames.
In a news release, Backlund said Calgary, the only NHL city he's ever played for, is home.
"This is a very special day for my family and I. Calgary is our home and to know that we will continue my playing career here is important to us."
"I'm as equally proud to be named the captain of this historic franchise. I'm ready for the responsibility that goes with wearing the C and I'm surrounded by a strong leadership group in our locker room that will help us take the next step toward winning the Stanley Cup."
Backlund was drafted 24th overall by the Flames in 2007. He needs 92 more regular season games in the NHL to make it to 1000.
