Instead of entering the NHL following the draft, Behrens decided to attend the University of Denver and played college hockey for them until now.
Along with being a top defenseman in college, Behrens also showcased his skills while representing team USA.
This past college season was his best yet, as in 44 games played, Behrens scored 4 goals with 27 assists, earning a total of 31 points. His plus/minus ratio was also his best yet, with a plus 25.
Behrens finished his college career with a solid resume. In 2022, Behrens was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team, along with being selected to the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team this year. He is a 2-time National Champion, winning in 2022 and then again in 2024, and ended his time with the University of Denver being awarded with the DU's Keith Magnuson Best Defensive Player Award.
It was announced earlier this year that the Avalanche had signed Behrens to a 3-year deal, starting him off with their AHL team, the Eagles. This was a good sign for the team, as Behrens had just finished his best year in hockey yet.
Unfortunately, Avalanche fans are going to have to wait even longer to see him on the ice, as this knee injury will be taking him out of the entire season.
No reports have specified exactly what this knee injury is, but we do know that it is serious enough to keep him off the ice all year.
Hoping for a fast recovery and to see him back on the ice for the 2025-2026 season!
