Chiarelli is infamous in Edmonton for the many painful years he brought to the franchise. Even with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the rise, Chiarelli was unable to build a contending team and left GM Ken Holland a lot of work when he got to Edmonton.
Chiarelli made many terrible moves like the Taylor Hall trade, trading the pick used on Mat Barzal for Griffin Reinhart, and the Milan Lucic signing.
However, it should be noted that Chiarelli did make a couple of good moves like extending Leon Draisaitl to his current contract and also extending McDavid to a less-than-league maximum deal.
Chiarelli will now get a fresh start in Ottawa and while the position is unknown, it can be assumed that the role is not the GM role. He could be a VP or President of hockey operations but only time will tell what his official role is.
