Oilers Connected To Top Winger On The Trade Market By An NHL Insider

The Edmonton Oilers have been linked to several different trade possibilities in the last few weeks. After their recent resurgence back into the playoff race insiders believe they could be buyers at the trade deadline.
Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun discussed what players could be available to the Oilers to bring in. Johnston suggested that star winger Jake Guentzel could be one of the bigger players that the Oilers could get.
«If we're imagining a world where Pittsburgh is both trading Guentzel and retaining salary, no buyer makes more sense than Edmonton. This would be an elite-level upgrade to a team already spilling over with elite forwards, and it would give the Oilers a natural shoot-first winger who could play alongside Leon Draisaitl. It's an intriguing thought. This is clearly another all-in year for the Oilers, who have found traction after their early-season struggles but will need a shot in the arm in the second half.»

The Oilers being back in the playoff picture means they can go all-in once again. Having Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl both in the prime of their careers the Oilers need to take advantage. With Jake Guentzel being on an expiring contract he makes a ton of sense as a target. The ultimate question is how much is Edmonton willing to give up.

Is Guentzel Worth The Price Tag?

Jake Guentzel is playing some of the best hockey of his career. As of today, he is on pace for 95 points and 40 goals with the Penguins. Despite this outstanding play, the Penguins are not winning games. If the Penguins continue to slide heading into the trade deadline a trade is likely.
Guentzel at 29 years old is in the last year of his deal in Pittsburgh. This means either the Oilers would be trading for a rental or would need to extend Guentzel well into his 30s at a high cap hit.
These factors make putting a trade package together difficult. The Penguins will likely want to get rid of Guentzel for assets if he is not re-signed this could bring his price down. If the Oilers are going to pursue this type of trade they need to be sure they do not overpay for short-term success.
