Jack Campbell's AHL Numbers Indicate That His NHL Career May Be Over
One of the bigger stories around the NHL this season has been the struggles of the Edmonton Oilers. How can it be that a team with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on it is playing so poorly? One reason has been the goaltending.
Oilers Veteran Goaltender Campbell Gets Demoted To American Hockey League
The Oilers have yet to truly solve their goalie problem but they took the first step when they waived Campbell, sending him to the AHL.
The news would normally have been shocking, but Campbell's numbers in the NHL this season have been so bad that no one was really surprised to see him waived. In 5 games with the Oilers this season, Campbell has a 1-4 record, a 4.50 goals-against-average and a .873 save percentage. In today's NHL those numbers are diabolically bad.
Campbell's Struggles Continue In The American Hockey League
Unfortunately for Campbell, his numbers have not improved since being sent to the American Hockey League. In fact, he appears to be making the Bakersfield Condors objectively worse than they were before Pickard was replaced by the NHL veteran.
In three games with the Condors, Campbell has an 0-3 record, a 4.36 goals-against-average, and a .819 save percentage. Somehow his numbers have actually gotten even worse.
At this point, one has to wonder of Campbell is playing through some kind of injury. While his numbers have never really been that great consistently, he should not be this bad. Right now, he's not just unplayable at the NHL level, he's actually unplayable at the AHL level.
One must wonder if he could actually see himself sent down to the ECHL. Such a move would be virtually unheard of for a goalie that started the year in the NHL, but right now its looking like a real possibility, given his performance. He has certainly put the Oilers in a tough position as his contract is untradable even to tanking teams at the moment. It will be interesting to see how the Oilers try to resurrect his career.
