The Edmonton Oilers have won 16 straight games heading into the All-Star break, and while most people expect them to chase a defenseman or a backup goaltender at the trade deadline, recent reports have speculated otherwise.

Edmonton Oilers chasing Alberta native Jake DeBrusk?

The Edmonton Oilers have already picked up Corey Perry in recent times, but now according to Pierre McGuire of 'The Eye Test' Podcast, the team are eyeing talented young forward Jake DeBrusk.
«But here's what I do know: If the Bruins don't sign him and, I don't know if they will or won't, I'm sure they value him I guarantee him an Alberta team will offer him a major contract,» McGuire said. «I guarantee you, whether it's Edmonton or Calgary, he's going to be taken care of in the province of Alberta. That's if Boston doesn't sign him, and that's not a scare tactic; it's reality. I mean, there's a need there for that type of player.»

There's plenty of 'ifs' that come with this situation, as the Bruins reportedly love DeBrusk, but if they don't extend him, a trade becomes a real possibility ahead of the March 8 trade deadline.

Both Alberta teams in play for DeBrusk

Right now, it appears the Oilers are looking to be smart with their assets, but if they can find a way to offload Jack Campbell, then DeBrusk becomes a real possibility.
In 47 games this season, the 27-year old has 12 goals and 25 points, and with the Oilers clearly chasing a Stanley Cup, he could be a solid addition to give this forward group even more depth, so whether it's now or in the summer, expect Edmonton to make a run at the Alberta native.
