The Edmonton Oilers have been trying to push through to a Stanley Cup for several seasons. Most believe their lack of depth has severely hindered their ability to win in the playoffs. Now a future Hall of Famer might be the perfect player to bring depth to the Oilers.

Kessel Open To A Depth Role?

Throughout the offseason Phil Kessel remains unsigned. Many wondered if this way due to his iron man streak and teams not wanting to break it. Kessel currently has the longest games played streak in the NHL.
According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman Kessel is willing to give up his streak to continue playing.
This clears significant hurdles for contending teams. It's no secret that Kessel isn't the player he used to be so a day off might be needed from time to time. Now NHL Trade Talk is connecting the dots between Kessel and the Edmonton Oilers.

Kessel To Edmonton

While Kessel is not the dynamic forward he used to be he is still a serviceable scorer. In 82 games last season Kessel put up 36 points. He also captured his 3rd Stanley Cup.
The Oilers are looking for depth scoring after losing Devin Shore to the Seattle Kraken. Kessel would even likely be an upgrade to Shore.
The biggest thing now will be the contract. The Oilers of course don't have a ton of cap space. This means along with being okay with less playing time Kessel will need to take a discount.
If he is looking to add a fourth Stanley Cup there's not many better options than Edmonton. The Oilers should absolutely consider adding the future Hall of Famer if there is mutual interest.
