According to a video done by Youtuber Johnny Hawkey the Patrick Kane rumors are starting to swirl again. This time Kane is linked to a team he has not been in the past.
Kane To The Oilers
In the video, Hawkey refers to the previous rumors for Kane like a return to his hometown of Buffalo, heading back to the Rangers as well as other contenders. He then heats up some rumors about the Edmonton Oilers. He references Jim Parsons of The Hockey Writers who wrote about the Oilers being a possible destination. In Parsons' write up there is a quote from Arthur Staple a Ranger reporter for The Athletic:
He might choose Edmonton or Colorado, or maybe Buffalo, depending on who can squeeze a modest cap hit and which team Kane feels has the best chance to win.
The Oilers' current forward core is currently very top-heavy. With a top six including Connor McDavid, Zach Hyman, Connor Brown, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl, and Evander Kane already. In a scenario where Patrick Kane comes in he would have to play top six minutes to get maximum value out of him. This would likely bump a player like Connor Brown or Zach Hyman to the bottom six. As long as Patrick Kane is able to keep a good scoring pace and not be atrocious defensively this would be a good investment for the Oilers. Kane would bring playoff and Stanley Cup pedigree to an otherwise young core.
Other Potential Destinations
The video does also talk about Colorado as read earlier as well as the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers. For the Rangers, it will all come down to if Chris Drury wants to pull the trigger again.
if Chris Drury decides, as he did at the deadline this past season, that the lineup is crying out for Kane, he'll move mountains to get it done, even though moving mountains in March didn't really work out
It will come down to which team Patrick Kane sees the most potential in. This gives the Oilers a great shot as they have two of the best players in the world on their roster.
