The Calgary Flames once again got screwed by the Edmonton Oilers because of a condition in the trade that sent Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars at the last deadline.

When the Flames sent the defenseman Chris Tanev to the Dallas Stars in a three-team trade with the New Jersey Devils, they trusted that the defenseman would be a key role in the Stars' playoff run. In fact, a role big enough to send them straight to the Stanley Cup Finals.
That's probably why they agreed on a 2026 conditional third-round pick in the return.
The condition was simple: if the Stars reached the Finals, the Flames would get the pick. Unfortunately for Calgary, their eternal rivals, the Oilers, came in the way and eliminated Dallas in the Western Conference Finals.
This means that the Flames won't get that pick.
In Edmonton, that doesn't change anything, except the satisfaction of hurting a rival team. And they're in the Finals.
While things couldn't be better for the Oilers, the Flames spent another year struggling. Some argue that it's actually Edmonton who sent the Flames into rebuilding, two years ago, by beating them in the second round of the playoffs.
Oilers sent the Calgary flames into a rebuild 2 years ago.. and since then.. the oilers have been preventing the Calgary from rebuilding by denying them trade conditions. That is hilarious.
The Oilers stranglehold on the Flames franchise continues
Rivalries are often played out on the ice, but this way of preventing the other team to improve outside the ice is remarkable.
Do you think the Calgary Flames got screwed in the Chris Tanev trade?
