Oilers general manager Ken Holland recently discussed the move in sending Campbell to the AHL. In his statement about the netminder, he admitted that he may have mishandled the situation. It seems as though he regrets having him play in the AHL right away. Notably, Campbell was awful in his first series of games with the Condors.
The 32-year-old is up to 17 games now with the Bakersfield Condors. He has improved his record to 10-7-0, lowered his goals-against-average to 2.90, and increased his save percentage to .909. Over his last seven games, he has been particularly effective, putting up a .935 save percentage over that span.
This could mean that Campbell is on the verge of making his NHL comeback. That being said, Pickard has been surprisingly good for the Oilers this season. He's only played in eight games, perhaps indicating that the coaching staff is not very confident in him, but he has a very respectable 5-2-0 record along with a 2.34 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. Campbell will likely have to outperform those numbers consistently in the AHL before he gets called up.
