The Edmonton Oilers should be fine because they did the same thing on opening night last year in a 8-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.
But, Wednesday's season opener against the Winnipeg Jets felt like a gut punch. Hopes were high at a packed Rogers Place, with fans buzzing for a fresh start and a chance to see the team shake off the preseason rust and begin a march back to the Stanley Cup Final.
But instead, we watched the Oilers stumble out of the gate with a crushing 6-0 loss. It wasn't just the scoreline, but the way it happened.
The performance mirrored the struggles we've been seeing all preseason, letting in way too many goals and looking disconnected.
Leon Draisaitl summed it up after the game, pointing to key mistakes that handed the Jets too many chances. Ten of the their 20 shots were high danger chances.
Offensively, Edmonton didn't get anything going. Yes they had 30 shots, but only ten were high danger chances at even strength against Connor Hellybuck. Connor McDavid didn't even register a shot, and while Draisaitl managed three, it wasn't enough. Then there's the defense, which looked shaky , and Stuart Skinner struggled in net, yielding five goals on just 13 shots with a -3.52 goals saved above expected, before getting pulled.
Draisaitl acknowledged that while Hellebuyck had a strong game, and the Jets defended well, the Oilers need to be better offensively, create more chances, and push harder inside.
We can certainly be a lot better offensively... we had enough to score a couple, but it wasn't meant to be.
It's a tough pill to swallow, but there's no time to dwell, this team can turn it around against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
