The Edmonton Oilers claimed Raphael Lavoie off waivers today, but they almost lost a fan favorite for good.

After the organization placed him on the wire, the Vegas Golden Knights claimed him only to release the 23 year-old a day later. So Lavoie was a free agent again and it could have been any one of a few rivals like the Colorado Avalanche, Winnipeg Jets, or Vancouver Canucks. Yet he found his way back to Edmonton who then assigned him to the minors.
Lavoie's been on quite a journey since being drafted 38th overall by Edmonton in 2019. Most of his professional growth has come with the Bakersfield Condors, where he's racked up 131 points over four seasons and he's going to embark on year five.
He's coming off a career year with 28 goals and 22 assists for 50 points. He's proven himself at the AHL level, but has yet to get a full cup of coffee at the NHL level. However, with two goals in this year's preseason, maybe the youngster is ready to make a significant impact .
The Oilers clearly see potential in Lavoie, but it's unclear where he will fit at the parent club. They were hoping Colorado who was rumored to have interest, wouldn't claim their prospect so they could send him down freely.
It's a tricky situation, and with the season opener against the Jets Wednesday, it's anyone's guess how this plays out. They could keep him stashed in the AHL as it's a good depth move but Lavoie will want his run in the show eventually.
