Juraj Slafkovsky, the 2022 first-overall pick, is facing an unexpected challenge that could impact his budding career.

Slafkovsky's Unsure Future

Jonathan Bernier from Le Journal De Montreal recently shared his thoughts on Slafkovsky's immediate future with the Montreal Canadiens. With 12 forwards already holding NHL contracts, Bernier questioned if there would be room for Slafkovsky on the team, especially if all players remain healthy.
The Canadian already has 12 forwards with NHL contracts. A group to which we must add the name of Juraj Slafkovsky. If everyone is healthy, at the end of training camp, there will be no room for a new kid on the roster...

...However, a start to the season in Laval for Slafkovsky is not impossible... The top pick in the 2022 draft missed the entire second half of the season with a left knee injury.

However, there's a chance Slafkovsky might start the season with the Laval Rocket, the Canadiens' AHL affiliate, given his past injury.

Debating the Demotion

The big question is whether Slafkovsky should be sent to the AHL. Some argue it could help his development. Playing in the AHL with the Laval Rocket would give him more ice time and opportunities to improve his skills.
Last season, Slafkovsky struggled with injuries, only managing 10 points in 39 games, often playing on the second powerplay unit. While he has the potential for the NHL, doubts remain about whether he's ready to excel there.
The final decision rests with Martin St. Louis and Kent Hughes, who must consider the pros and cons of demoting Slafkovsky for his development. Fans will eagerly await their decision to see what lies ahead for this promising Slovak talent.
