The Montreal Canadiens have built a solid foundation over the past few years, and after recent comments from Kent Hughes, a Tyler Toffoli reunion has gained steam.
After two stellar seasons with the Calgary Flames and New Jersey/Winnipeg over the past two years, Tyler Toffoli is becoming a very hot commodity on the NHL free agency market ahead of the July opening. Following years of 34 and 33 goals, Toffoli is drawing interest from the entire NHL, and now, a journalist has posed the idea of a reunion with the Canadiens.
«He has proven over the past few years that he is a remarkably consistent scorer. He surpassed 30 goals in each of his last two seasons, which were his two best seasons in terms of goals.
Additionally, I think Tyler Toffoli enjoyed his time in Montreal [...] maybe the Canadiens could make it work.
Four years is not unreasonable, even though I think it's a bit longer than what the Canadiens would prefer for a free agent.
If he is willing to accept a four-year contract, then yes, Kent Hughes should at least inquire to see if they can find common ground to bring him back to Montreal.» - Arpon Basu
This report goes hand-in-hand with GM Kent Hughes' admission that the team will be targeting a middle-six forward, with the intention of making a major impact in free agency, unlike last summer. On top of that, Toffoli remains good friends with several Canadiens players, including Jake Evans, whose wedding the veteran star is currently attending.
Whether or not the two sides can come to an agreement is yet to be seen, but given the teams needs and how much Toffoli enjoyed his time in Montreal, it certainly makes sense and can't be ruled out when free agency begins.
