A top GM has made an outrageous claim that his team does not need a recent 2nd overall pick.

Devils GM Comments On 2nd Overall Pick

In a recent interview on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, Tom Fitzgerald, the General Manager of the New Jersey Devils, talked about how the team is approaching their top draft pick, Simon Nemec.
Fitzgerald's comments about Simon Nemec, the 2nd overall pick in the 2022 draft, have raised some eyebrows. Nemec had a strong season in the AHL, scoring 34 points in 65 games as an 18-year-old defenseman. He also impressed as the captain of Slovakia's team at the World Junior Championships.
Here's what Fitzgerald said about Nemec:
"Do we need him to make our team? I don't need him to make our team. But, if he comes into camp and tells us I'm not going down because my play deserves to be here,' we'll deal with that when the time comes. That's a good problem to have." - Tom Fitzgerald

The Devil's Defensive Depth

Tom Fitzgerald's approach to Simon Nemec also reflects the impressive depth the Devils have been building on their blue line. With the likes of Dougie Hamilton, an established star in the NHL, leading the defensive corps, the team is in a solid position. John Marino, acquired through a trade, has been another valuable addition, while Colin Miller provides experienced support.
On the left side, Jonas Siegenthaler has shown promise, and Luke Hughes, a recent high draft pick, carries immense potential. Brendan Smith, a seasoned defenseman, adds stability to the mix. This depth means that Nemec will need to shine exceptionally during training camp to secure his spot, showcasing the fierce competition within the Devils' defensive ranks.
Fitzgerald's emphasis on allowing prospects like Nemec to develop gradually mirrors the Devils' commitment to nurturing talent for long-term success. The decision to let Luke Hughes hone his skills in college for two years before transitioning to the NHL exemplifies this patient approach.
As the team continues to build a strong foundation, the Devils' future appears bright, with the potential emergence of players like Nemec promising a competitive edge for years to come.
