Patrick Kane will go down as one of the best players in the NHL from this past generation, but after a flame out in the playoffs, his future in New York is potentially over.

Still a free agent

After the mid-season trade to acquire Kane, the Rangers let him walk into free agency, and now they may not need him back.
According to a report from The Athletic, there's a mutual interest for Kane to return to The Big Apple, but if they don't need him, keep an eye on three other teams.

Future leaked

In that report, Arthur Staple revealed that New York may look to Kane if they start slow, but if they build well to start the year in their new system, they may not need him at all.
In a best-case scenario, the Rangers don't need Kane they will have adopted Laviolette's system quickly, the pieces added in free agency will fall into place and all will be well by November.

Things don't usually work like that, though. And if Chris Drury decides, as he did at the deadline this past season, that the lineup is crying out for Kane, he'll move mountains to get it done, even though moving mountains in March didn't really work out.

And then Kane has to choose them. He might choose Edmonton or Colorado, or maybe Buffalo, depending on who can squeeze a modest cap hit in and which team Kane feels has the best chance to win. I have heard he really enjoyed his brief Rangers stint and would love a shot to show what he can do there when healthy, which he definitely was not in the spring.

The report also states that Colorado, Edmonton and Buffalo all have interest, and if they can tempt him into a good role and a potential playoff role, those connections all make sense.
