It looks like Steven Stamkos will finally be hitting the open market.

His agent, Don Meehan, told Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic that the Tampa Bay Lightning center will hit NHL free agency on July 1st.
From Stamkos' agent Don Meehan, who tells me regarding his client:
«He will be a free agent on July 1.»
So would appear Stamkos is going to market Monday unless something changes in Tampa's position.

Stamkos is wrapping up his eight-year, $8.5 million contract. While it seemed like a no-brainer to re-sign the Lightning captain, the two sides have struggled to reach an agreement all season.
Reportedly, the Lightning offered Stamkos an eight-year deal at around $3 million AAV, while Stamkos was seeking $4 million to $5 million AAV, depending on the term.

Stamkos had another stellar season, scoring 40 goals and 81 points in 79 games, consistent with his career performance. However, at 34, the Lightning likely have concerns about when his production might start to decline.
the #Bolts GM, Julien BriseBois, spoke to the media over Zoom this morning and the first question he was asked focused on the future of the #Bolts captain, Steven Stamkos:

"As we stand here right now, we haven't been able to reach an agreement yet. I don't know if we will be able to reach an agreement but we met with Steven's agent again yesterday and both sides are still interested in getting a deal done but we have not been able to agree to terms that are satisfactory for both sides. I think, at this time, it's probably best if I leave my comments to that for the time being.

Stamkos was the Lightning's first overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft and has spent 16 seasons with Tampa Bay, including 10 as captain. During his tenure, he won consecutive Stanley Cups (2020 and 2021) and two Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophies (2010 and 2012).
If this is the end of Stamkos' time with the Lightning, he leaves as the franchise leader in games played (1,082), goals (555), and points (1,137), among many other records.
The potential departure of Stamkos marks a significant moment for the Lightning, as they prepare for a future without their long-time leader.
