Matthews was one of two key stars looking for a new contract this summer, with the other being William Nylander, who has proven how valuable he is to this team over the past few years.
In the last two seasons, Nylander has netted 74 goals for this team, and unsurprisingly, he now feels he should be paid adequately, with whispers swirling that he's searching for near $10 million on his next contract.
In his latest press conference, GM Brad Treliving appeared to take a shot at Nylander however, who still has yet to find a new deal with training camp looming around the corner.
It appears as though the Leafs new GM isn't fond of the way Nylander has gone about getting a new deal, and with talks getting no closer, there's a very good chance he goes into the 2023-24 season without a new deal in place.
