There's no doubt Matthew Knies has a bright future in the NHL. At 21, the former second-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs seems to have cemented a spot in the top six to nine players. However, in advance of a game against one of the top teams in the league, Knies said something that he would probably like to have back.

Ahead of Game Against the Jets a Maple Leafs Rookie Makes Cocky Statement

The Winnipeg Jets are taking on the Maple Leafs tonight in Toronto. Speaking to reporters before the game, Knies seemed to think the pressure was entirely on the Jets, despite the fact that the Maple Leafs trail Winnipeg by 10 points in the standings and aren't really living up to expectations that were set for them ahead of the 2023-24 season.
"Matthew Knies on Toronto's big two-game set against the Jets: "Everyone wants to play their best against us, right? I think everyone kinda has us circled on their calendar, and I think that makes us raise a level."

Matthew Knies Comes Off Cocky ahead of Game against the Winnipeg Jets

Given the standings, I sincerely doubt the Winnipeg Jets have thought about the Maple Leafs much at all this season. The comment comes off as Toronto-centric, and many on X seemed to feel that way as well.
"I think he's a little full of himself and the team. The only thing people have circled is Torontos first round playoff series."
"Lots of pressure on the Leafs tonight. Jets are without 2/3 of their top line, and are playing their backup goalie. Anything but a dominating win against the Jets should tell you all you need to know about the Leafs this year."

Unless Toronto comes out on top, Knies may be eating his words tomorrow morning.
