The NHL recently announced a polarizing new policy for players and staff. Today Morgan Rielly made a strong reply against the new policy.

NHL Creates New Pride Night Policy

The NHL announced yesterday that they were making new updates to the protocols for specialty nights and specifically pride nights. They have now banned the use of Pride tape by players to show support for the cause.

The NHL has issued a league-wide ban on Pride Tape', which was rainbow coloured hockey tape some players used by choice. Players are no longer permitted to have rainbow tape on their sticks in practices, warmups or games. Unlike the warmup jerseys that were recently banned, the stick tape was completely optional.

«Outsports has learned that the NHL has issued a league-wide ban of Pride Tape on the ice with the players during warm-ups, games and even practices. A league spokesperson has confirmed this change in policy with Outsports.»

The NHL was also forced to clarify a memo sent to every team recently after some expressed confusion. The main part that had teams unsure was:

«Players shall not be put in the position of having to demonstrate (or where they may be appearing to demonstrate) personal support for any Special Initiatives. A factor that may be considered in this regard includes, for example, whether a Player (or Players) is required to be in close proximity to any groups or individuals visibly or otherwise clearly associated with such Special Initiative(s).»

Since the announcement, many people have reacted and are frustrated with the NHL for their lack of support toward the NHL community. This group of frustrated supporters includes Toronto Maple Leafs star Morgan Rielly.

Rielly Makes A Strong Statement Against NHL Policy

Morgan Rielly made a massive statement in support of the LGBTQ+ community after the recent decision by the NHL.
I wish players had the right to do more and be more involved. I'm going to continue to be involved in the community and offer support to those communities and those groups that want that, need that. - Morgan Rielly
Morgan Rielly has taken a stance as an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and will be one of the biggest voices in making sure they are represented in the hockey community. With the support of players like Morgan Rielly hopefully, the NHL will be able to find a way for players to show their support who would like to.
