The Toronto Maple Leafs recently went to arbitration with young goaltender Ilya Samsonov, and after he was awarded $3.55 million, it shone a light on a glaring problem for them ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Any cap space left in Toronto?
After that move, the Maple Leafs now officially find themselves $12 million over the salary cap heading into the season, putting new General Manager Brad Treliving in a very tough spot.
While they've been linked to the likes of Erik Karlsson, it appears as though the team have a tough decision or two to make in the weeks ahead, as the roster can not go into training camp looking like it currently does.
What moves can we expect?
Firstly, it's likely that the team are going to release or move goaltender Matt Murray, which should save them some space, and with Jake Muzzin on the LTIR, that will give them a little more cap relief.
Beyond that, teams are likely to come calling on some of the Leafs highest paid names, and given everyone knows the situation the Maple Leafs are in, teams may look to take advantage of that.
