Its not often you hear of an endorsement from one of your rivals, but Connor McDavid gave Auston Matthews a great review as the new Leafs' captain.
In an recent interview with Sportsnet, McDavid was asked about his fellow NHL star, rival and off-season friend, Auston Matthews, becoming captain of his hometown hockey team. Not only did McDavid oblige and answer the question, he did so thoughtfully and really gave Matthews a glowing endorsement.
"First and foremost, he's an amazing player, great player, but he's a great person, highly intelligent, loves the game, loves the Leafs," McDavid said at the NHL North American Media Tour in Las Vegas. "I think he's a great captain." Matthews has the right personality to be captain in Toronto
The two had played together briefly as members of Team North America during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Since then, they've been linked as being training partners in the offseason. The two have been spotted hanging out together as friends away from the rink or working out in the gym and on the ice in Toronto on multiple occasions. This has lead to many speculation of the possibility of McDavid one day dawning the blue and white and joining Matthews in Toronto. With McDavid not signed to a contract extension yet one can only imagine.
It's not every day that the best player in the world thinks the world of you and says as much when he doesn't have to.
