Morgan Rielly gave his thoughts after the Toronto Maple Leafs appointed Auston Matthews as their 26th captain, taking over from John Tavares, who's held the role since 2019.

It's been interesting to see how John Tavares has handled passing the blue and white torch to Matthews. According to Rielly, Tavares has been first-class throughout the transition process.
When this decision was made, it wasn't easy for him. But he's handled everything like the true professional he is. I talked with him, and the first thing that stood out was how well he's taking it. His attitude has been nothing short of outstanding, which isn't a surprise to anyone who knows him. It really shows the kind of person John is-he's all about what's best for the team and how we can succeed together.
As for how Matthews will embrace the new letter on his sweater, Rielly is ecstatic.
We've had the chance to watch him grow and mature over the last eight or nine years. He's really pumped for this new chapter, and I think he's ready to lead the team forward. It's an exciting time for us, and we're all behind him 100%.
Here's hoping this new leadership can finally help the Leafs make that deep playoff run fans have been been dreaming about.
