Sean Avery has been one of hockey's most memorable personalities in recent memory.
Whether it be yelling at bikers in New York City, or chirping current NHL players, Avery does it all. This time, he's really pushing the boundaries of what's realistic.
Sean Avery made a guest appearance on Leafs Morning Take, where he claimed that if given eight weeks to train, he could crack the Maple Leafs roster.
"I could make the Leafs. I'm probably in the best shape of my life... I would give that dressing room a run for their money. Could I get my timing in 5 weeks to be ready for training camp? No, but if they knew that I was on the team and it was like 'ok, he needs 8 weeks', then I would be ready and I would be much more effective than
Ryan Reaves."
Avery specifically mentioned Reaves, who he claims he would outperform. Reaves fills the same "tough guy" role that Avery filled for many teams during his lengthy NHL career.
While Avery may be in the best shape of his life, it's important to look at the context of this comment.
Avery last played in the NHL in 2011-12 for the New York Rangers. Avery was a bottom-six player his entire career, and at 43 years of age, after not playing for a decade, likely wouldn't crack an AHL roster.
Some of the guys pushing for roster spots with Toronto are in their early 20s, with stamina that lasts for days.
We're happy to see that Avery is in good shape and enjoying himself, but we don't believe that he could crack Toronto's roster, even with an eight-week training period.
