The New Jersey Devils lost to Toronto last night but head coach Sheldon Keefe refused to admit that his new team was outplayed by his former club.

The Leafs defeated the Devils by a score of 4-2 last night despite quiet nights from their top players. Instead, the team got goals from John Tavares, Steven Lorentz, Bobby McMann, and Max Pacioretty. Notably, both Pacioretty and Lorentz came into camp on PTOs but earned one-year deals. Those additions have proven to pay off immediately.
Naturally, Leafs fans took to social media to troll the Devils following the game. Many had extra fun relishing in the victory considering the fact that Sheldon Keefe, who was not super popular in Toronto, was coaching the other team for once.
Speaking of Keefe, he implied that the Leafs did not deserve to win the game at all. In fact, he laid into his own team saying they were too easy to play against tonight, effectively making the game a layup for the Leafs, who were able to win not through their own efforts, but simply because the Devils did not put up enough of a fight.
"You can't spot any team in the league a lead like that. I don't know that they deserved to be up three the way that they [were playing] but they were. Its a hard hole to get out of for sure but in some cases we just dug our own hole there. Puck play not nearly good enough and the defending was not even close to hard enough tonight."

This is interesting to hear coming from Keefe considering the fact that many Leafs fans had these exact same criticisms of the team when Keefe was head coach there. Perhaps this is a pattern that we will see repeated as the coach continues his career. For now though, Leafs fans will enjoy this moment as they move into a new era of hockey for their team.
