The Winnipeg Jets took a risk by placing Kaapo Kahkonen on waivers, and now they've seen the Colorado Avalanche swoop in and claim him.

On Thursday, the Winnipeg Jets placed goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen on waivers, with the hope that he would clear and head to the AHL to give them further, much needed goaltender depth this season. With Eric Comrie the surprising backup, the team were needing Kahkonen to clear, but on Friday, it was confirmed that didn't happen.
Not only did he not clear waivers, but Kahkonen was claimed by a fierce Jets rival in the Colorado Avalanche, who were desperate for an experienced backup behind starter Alexandar Georgiev.
According to reports, Kahkonen was a player that the Avalanche had their eyes on dating back to last season, and while he was ultimately dealt to the New Jersey Devils at the trade deadline, he's now a member of the Colorado Avalanche.
This will now create a backup situation in Colorado, with Justus Annunen serving as the backup for game one of the season, but with Kahkonen's 139 games of experience behind him and a solid 3.33 GAA over that time, he may ultimately win the role moving forward.
For the Jets, this leaves them with question marks of their own as Eric Comrie isn't someone that people expected to be a backup goaltender this season, and with Thomas Milic now the No. 3, this team needs to make a move for further depth in case of an injury. Thankfully there's plenty of potential help out there in free agency or via trade, and while the team will lean on Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck, should things go south or an injury occur, they've got plenty of work to do to make this team into a Stanley Cup contender.
