After the Toronto Maple Leafs lost to the Boston Bruins 3-1 in Game 4, there was a lot of buzz during the post-game interviews. Sheldon Keefe cleared up why Auston Matthews was absent in the third period, saying it was due to what's believed to be an illness. TNT added it was food poisoning, making him questionable for Toronto's win or go home Game 5 in Boston on Tuesday.
Matthews is not currently on the bench with food poisoning according to the TNT broadcast.
Now, we don't know the details of his illness or how long he's been dealing with it. But based on what Keefe said, it seems like Matthews might have been battling this for a while, and it's been getting more challenging for him to push through.
For whatever reason, it's not one of those run-of-the-mill everyday type of illnesses that sort of come and go. This one has lingered. The affects have lingered and gotten worse when he gets on the ice and is asserting himself.
Keefe was mum about Matthews' situation, but it's not anyone's business. We should just be wishing him a speedy recovery.
As fans, maybe we should give Matthews a break and let him rest. The 26 year-old's health should be the primary concern. That's what matters in the long run.
