The Toronto Maple Leafs aimed to toughen up their roster with signings like Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Ryan Reaves.

But now, one of these players might be leaving sooner than expected.

Uncertainty Surrounding Reaves

Recent reports suggest that Ryan Reaves might not be in Toronto for long.
The Maple Leafs are dealing with salary cap constraints as the new season approaches, leading to discussions about potentially sending Reaves down to the minors.
Reaves has a contract with an annual salary of $1.35 million.
Putting him on waivers could give the Maple Leafs more financial flexibility, but there's a catch any other NHL team can claim him and his contract.
However, there's a good reason why this may not happen.
Ryan Reaves is 36 years old and signed a 3-year deal with a $1.35 million salary. He's primarily known for his physical presence and defensive role, with limited offensive output.
Given these factors, it's unlikely that another team would want to claim him, especially as he's getting older.

Brad Treliving's Strategy

When the Maple Leafs signed Reaves, they likely knew this situation could arise. If they decide to waive him, it would provide the team with flexibility without affecting the development of younger, more skilled players.
However, if another team does claim Reaves, it could be a bit embarrassing for the Maple Leafs' General Manager, Brad Treliving.
The team signed Reaves to add toughness, so losing him without gaining anything in return wouldn't align with their goals.
Nonetheless, it would free up cap space and release the Maple Leafs from their long-term commitment to Reaves.
Unless there's a trade ahead of time, I still think Reaves hits waivers early on as a pure flexibility move.

He won't get claimed with his contract. He's not an 82-game player and the Leafs would be forced to play the exact same players if he's part of a 20-man roster.
In the upcoming weeks, keep an eye on whether the Toronto Maple Leafs take action to address their salary cap issues, potentially involving Ryan Reaves.
This situation is worth watching as the season draws near.
