Today the NHL announced exciting new plans for an international tournament.

NHL Announces New Tournament

The NHL has finally announced its plans for the new World Cup of Hockey in 2025. The first bit of news is that this tournament will not be called the World Cup of Hockey. The event will be a scaled-back version which is why the name will change.
Current plan for the 2025 World Cup of Hockey, which will NOT be called the World Cup of Hockey:

- 4 national teams (US, CAN, SWE, FIN)
- Zero Russians
- Chance USA and Canada play 3 times
- Next proper World Cup might not be until 2028.
The plans are to have only four nations compete in this tournament those being U.S., Canada, Sweden, and Finland. This scaled-back version is a stepping stone to a more full version in the future when the league has more time to plan the event.
"We're hopeful to have an international tournament in February 2025," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said in Sweden last week. "We're working with the players' association on the construct of that. Then, after that, we would like to be in a regular rotation between the Olympics and the World Cup every other year. That obviously involves us having an agreement to go to Milan [in 2026], and that is still a work in progress."

This format will give the NHL a gauge for how to organize things in the future. Unfortunately with the Olympics in 2026, this means a full-scale World Cup of Hockey likely won't happen until 2028.
Regardless of the scale, it is fantastic that the NHL is committed to providing players and fans what they have been clamoring for in best-on-best international play. As the 2025 World Cup approaches more details will be made available and we will bring them to you.
