NHL commissioner Gary Bettman addressed the Corey Perry situation with the Blackhawks for the first time today. What he said has implications for the player and organization, as well as other teams potentially.

Bettman Concludes Blackhawks Investigation Was Done Properly

In the statement, Bettman essentially noted that the Blackhawks were correct in how they handled the investigation into former Blackhawk Corey Perry. There previously had been some speculation that he could sue the team for a wrongful termination of his contract, but that now seems to be very unlikely. However, Bettman did not say that Perry would have to have some kind of special interview with the league to be reinstated as a free agent. As such, it seems like the 38-year-old is free to sign with a new team if he wants to. However, Bettman did appear to leave the door open on that front, so it is possible that Perry may still need to meet with the league at some point.
Gary Bettman says he hasn't determined if Corey Perry will need to have a conversation with him if he wishes to resume his NHL career at some point.
Bettman says he is comfortable with results of Blackhawks investigation into Corey Perry, has not determined if the player will need to have a conversation/hearing with him to return
Perry will have to sign with a new team before the trade deadline if he wants to be eligible to play in the playoffs. Whether or not he is still interested in rejoining the league this year remains a mystery.
