With Canada's Stanley Cup drought reaching 31 years, many expected the country to rally behind the Edmonton Oilers, however viewership suggests that is not the case.

According to readily available TV viewership numbers, the people watching in Canada and the USA were much lower than expected, which a shocking amount of people not watching the games at all.
The few ratings numbers that have been released haven't been great . . . According to the NHL, seven million people across North America watched Game 1.

Early in the week, Léger released a pollafter asking Canadians and Americans if they intended to follow the Edmonton-Florida series. The headline was that a majority in this country 58 per cent were not paying much or any attention.
While 7 million people might seem like a large amount of viewership, the NHL will be disappointed with these numbers as the country of Canada is known to rally behind the teams that make deep playoffs runs, such as the Montreal Canadiens in 2021.
In comparison with the 7 million viewers for the Stanley Cup Final, Game 7 of the 1st round between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins had 5 million Canadian viewers, and including the USA, had almost 9 million viewers, substantially more than the 7 million.
Perhaps the lower than expected numbers are due to Edmonton falling behind 3-0 in the series, or due to the fact that eastern Canadians pay less attention to the Oilers because they play in the Western Conference, either way, the NHL will be concerned with the numbers.
