The family of the late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau has filed a
motion to block the release of sensitive materials regarding the tragic deaths of the brothers. On September 2, the Gaudreau family filed a motion to the court in New Jersey in an effort to block access to numerous documents and videos related to the August 29 incident. These include 911 calls, autopsy photos and reports, and investigation records and videos of the incident. It comes after photos of handwritten police notes from the scene surfaced online, with many taking to social media to circulate the images.
It was a sad incident that occurred when Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver as they were riding their bicycles. The brothers were set to be groomsmen at their sister Katie's wedding the following day. Johnny was an accomplished NHL player who had played 11 years in the league for the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets. His brother, Matthew, had been a standout playing hockey at Boston College. Johnny was 31, Matthew 29, at the time of their deaths.
The driver of the other car, Sean M. Higgins, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with two counts of death by auto. Authorities said Higgins had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.087, just above the legal limit of 0.08. In his initial courtroom appearance, prosecutors also said Higgins was speeding at the time of the crash. The Columbus Dispatch reported Higgins had told investigators he drank "five to six" beers before the crash and that, while in police custody, he had already called a relative and friend and confessed to the incident.
The Gaudreau brothers received a joint funeral last month. In attendance were family members, friends, teammates in the NHL, and on-ice officials all showing their respect. During the emotional service, Johnny's widow, Meredith, announced that she is expecting their third child. They had two children: their daughter Noa, who just turned two, and their son Johnny, who was born in February.
In addition, Matthew's wife Madeline announced that she, too, is pregnant with their first child, a boy named Tripp, who will arrive later this year. The family started a GoFundMe for Madeline and her baby on the way, which has gained more than $850,000 as of early October. The family's legal moves to
keep certain information private come as they remain in agony over the tremendous loss of Johnny and Matthew.
