The Anaheim Ducks and New Jersey Devils are on opposite ends of the NHL standings this season. Now the two teams may be working together to improve both team's futures.
Devils And Ducks Working On Blockbuster Trade Involving Goaltender
New rumors have emerged that suggest the Devils and Ducks are working together on a trade that would send goaltender John Gibson to the Devils in exchange for draft picks and prospects. The move would make sense considering the fact that the Ducks have squandered Gibson's career to this point and the Devils are in desperate need for a goalie. Eklund of Hockeybuzz.com believes that the Devils may be close to acquiring Gibson, but the team will not like the price.
The Devils are entering into serious talks with the Ducks involving John Gibson who would really solidify the net. some feel the Devils are about to explode in the standings, and the only thing holding back the Devils from a payoff spot is stability in the nets. The costs will be quite high and the Devils may have to give up two serious prospects and a first.
This has been backed up by other sources that claim the teams have been in discussions in recent days.
Per source, NJHN has learned that #NJDevils GM Tom Fitzgerald has re-engaged in John Gibson.
The Ducks are in town this week to play the Isles, Rangers, and Devils.
Also notable is the fact that the Ducks have had scouts present at recent Devils games, suggesting the team is interested in a player on the team's current roster.
The Cost To Acquire Gibson May Be Too High For The Devils
All of that being said, if the Ducks are going to ask for too much, the Devils may seek other options. One mock trade has multiple top prosects as well as a 1st round pick going to the Ducks in exchange for Gibson. Some fans believe a trade would look something like this:
Alexander Holtz has already been in trade rumors as the Sharks were reportedly targeting him as part of the Timo Meier trade. Ultimately, they were unsuccessful in their efforts to make him part of the deal. This year he looks much improved, so the Devils may not be willing to trade him at all. The team does have a number of elite prospects on defense though so perhaps Casey would be seen as an acceptable loss.
Regardless though, this seems like a high price for Gibson. If the Devils are serious about upgrading their goaltender position, then a move like this may be necessary. Whether or not that is the case remains to be seen. So far we have heard the team making noise about trades, but nothing has materialized.
