This NHL insider just revealed the price that the Edmonton Oilers nearly paid to acquire a goaltender from this Canadian team, and why the trade fell through.

Elliotte Friedman Reveals A Trade Nearly Occurred Between the Oilers and the Canadiens

The Edmonton Oilers have had a historic comeback this season. They started the year in the dumpster, and have pretty much fought their way out and now sit nicely in the standings of their division.
The panic didn't come without speculation for a goaltender trade, though, as the Oilers' struggles were placed heavily on goaltending performances. Now, Elliotte Friedman has revealed that he believes a trade that would have sent Jake Allen to the Oilers from the Canadiens has fell through.
"I really do think there was a time this year I thought Jake Allen was going to be in Edmonton, now I'm not convinced that's going to happen"

"I think what's happened there is that he's got a price that he's set, I think it's a draft pick,"

"There's the trade price and then there's the retention price," admitted Friedman. "And the price gets higher if there's retention."

Oilers Have Leverage As Skinner Performs During Season Comeback

The Oilers can be happy that management didn't panic during their slide, as they now have much more leverage when it comes to finding a deal that fits them. With Skinner playing well, leading the Oilers on their historic comeback, the Oilers have the leverage to walk away from a goaltending deal if they feel the price is too high.
We will see if the Oilers do in fact think they need backup in net, and if a trade is necessary, as the deadline approaches just a month and a half from now.
as seen on Hockey Feed - "Trade between Oilers and Habs may have fallen apart."
