A recent report has confirmed whether or not the Jets tried to trade Scheifele this offseason before signing him to an extension.
Jets Organization in No Position to Trade Scheifele
The Winnipeg Jets, like every franchise in the NHL, is driven primarily by ticket sales and revenue. Right now, the Jets are struggling to get people through the door, despite fielding a decent enough team. According to Darren Dreger, this may be handcuffing them when considering a potential rebuild.
«If you don't extend Scheifele and Hellebuyck because you're embracing a rebuild, guess what happens? Josh Morrissey is knocking on your door and Kyle Connor is knocking on the door. And now you've got Cole Perfetti with all due respect and Dylan Samberg as your season ticket draws, right? It gets problematic. I mean, it's problematic right now for the Winnipeg Jets.
Every team goes through the cycle of making a push and then rebuilding, however, it looks like the Jets are in an awkward spot between the two. All the while, they are feeling the pressure of not being able to fill the Canada Life Center.
Off to a Slow Start in Winnipeg
The tactic of signing Scheifele and Hellebuyck in order to try and energize fans and the Jets' roster isn't going as planned, either. The Jets are off to a mediocre start at 2-3, despite Scheifele's best efforts of 4 goals and 2 assists in the 5 games.

The Jets have just made a crucial decision in not going for a rebuild. It's now time to see how this plays out the rest of the year.
