There's no doubt that Scheifele and Hellebuyck were the center of trade talks for the Jets this offseason, as both players enter the last year of their contracts with the Jets. Both have stated that they want to stay in Winnipeg, however, they have not signed an extension.
Cheveldayoff faces the classic conundrum of deciding whether or not to keep Hellebuyck and Scheifele as "owned rentals" this year, allowing them to walk next summer in free agency, or trading them before the deadline. If he chooses the latter, he will face significant pressure to get a deal done by the deadline that will make the Jets a more contending team.
The other option, of course, is for both to sign an extension with the club. Cheveldayoff aims to resume talks with both players once training camp begins.
