The AHL implemented a significant safety measure for players after Adam Johnson's tragic passing.

It's been almost a year since Adam Johnson's life was cut short due to a terrible on-ice incident.
Johnson, 29, was struck on the neck by a skate blade during a game and tragically passed away from his injuries.
All this could have been prevented if he had worn a neck guard.
Now, more and more hockey leagues decide to make this piece of equipment mandatory, and the American Hockey League just made that list.
They released an official statement, in which we learned that all players and officials will need to wear a neck guard.
Read their press release here:
"SPRINGFIELD, Mass. American Hockey League President and CEO Scott Howson announced today that the AHL's Board of Governors has unanimously approved the mandatory use of cut-resistant neck protection by all of its players and on-ice officials, beginning with the upcoming 2024-25 season.

All AHL skaters, referees, and linespersons, regardless of age or experience, will be required to wear approved cut-resistant neck protection beginning this fall. Cut-resistant socks and wrist sleeves were previously mandated for AHL players and officials beginning with the 2023-24 season.

In operation since 1936, the AHL serves as the top development league for all 32 National Hockey League teams. Nearly 90 percent of today's NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and more than 130 honored members of the Hockey Hall of Fame spent time in the AHL in their careers."
Even if he was never drafted, Johnson played in 13 games in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins between 2018 and 2020. In that time, he tallied four points, including one goal. Afterwards, he decided to pursue his career in Europe and joined the Nottingham Panthers, the last hockey uniform he ever wore.
