The Edmonton Oilers let two promising young players walk this past week as RFA's, and now the official reason behind the scenes has been revealed.

This past week has been a wild ride for the Edmonton Oilers and new General Manager Stan Bowman, as they surprisingly let both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway walk away as RFA's, signed by the St. Louis Blues by two shocking offer sheets. Many believed that they would match at least one of those deals, but that ultimately didn't happen, and now the reason behind letting both walk has been revealed.
According to veteran reporter Mark Spector, the Edmonton Oilers desire to have both Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid sign long-term, with a few million dollar discounts in those deals has played a major role in deciding to not match either offer.
We've already seen several veterans join the team on very team-friendly deals, and with that in mind, they will hope that continues moving forward, but if they were to overpay on two unproven players that turn out to not be as good as advertised, it would ruin those plans. Ultimately, both Broberg and Holloway may turn out to be stars in the NHL, but simply put, the Oilers couldn't take that chance, and with their two biggest stars looking to take discounts, it just didn't make financial sense to match either offer.
