The 2018 World Junior Scandal was an abhorrent incident that will plague the reputation of hockey players and fans to come. Therefore, it must be handled with the utmost seriousness when recovering evidence of wrongdoing. Fans recognized this, and when made aware of the situation took notice of several players from the team taking leaves of absence at the same time. Among these was Dillon Dube of the Calgary Flames, who the team said was under the care of mental health professionals.
Though the team denied knowing of his alleged involvement in the incident, Dillon Dube was one of the five asked to surrender to London police. With him were Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, and Cal Foote. All are awaiting trial, most of who will face a single charge while McLeod faces two.
Though the KHL can decide to sign whoever they want, it does not seem appropriate that Canadian law allows these players to sign in a different country while under investigation. Hopefully, the legal system will work swiftly and effectively to handle this miscarriage of justice.
