Size isn't as important as it once was in hockey, but it still has a role, and in the skillful NCAA competition, size can make a huge difference. Now, Penn State may have arguably the biggest player in the league, as they have received a commitment from a huge Russian defenseman at just 16-years of age.
Defenseman Alexander Karmanov comes in at a jaw-dropping 6-foot-11, weighing in 251 pounds, and given that he's likely not done growing into his body, he may be one of the biggest players in NCAA history when he makes it to North America. In 25 games across three U18 competitions this season, he has three goals and 9 points, so it's clear that he still has plenty of work to do on his game.
Despite that, there are very few players that come in at 6-foot-11, so as a defenseman, he'll have the ability to take up plenty of space and impact the game, so keep an eye on Karmanov as a player of the future at Penn State.
