Bruins GM Hints At Potentially Trading A Star Forward
The Boston Bruins are heading into an intriguing season, especially with the retirements of their star centers and club legends, Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci. Amidst these changes, one burning question is on everyone's mind: What's next for Jake DeBrusk?
Jake DeBrusk has been in the spotlight after previously requesting a trade out of Boston. If he doesn't agree to a contract extension with the Bruins, he'll become an unrestricted free agent in 2024. DeBrusk's recent performance has added to the intrigue.
Last season, DeBrusk had his best year yet, hitting a career-high in goals and earning 50 points. As he approaches free agency, General Manager Don Sweeney has praised DeBrusk's determination.
«Jake deserves a lot of credit. He put all those things [e.g. his trade request] aside and just went out and performed, was on pace for a really, really good year. Had a really good year. Even more so, battled through a couple of different injuries and came back and played well again. I think that's Jake's maturity both as a player, as a person are an important part of our club.»
Sweeney is hopeful that both parties can agree on a new contract. The big question is whether DeBrusk will stay in Boston or explore other options in the market next summer.
«We'd like to know if Jake indeed does what to be here. Hopefully, we can find common ground. We'd like to see Jake remain with the Boston Bruins.» - Don Sweeney
Securing a deal to keep DeBrusk in Boston would be a significant win for the Bruins. The Edmonton native, and the son of former NHL enforcer and current TV analyst Louie DeBrusk, has expressed his desire to stay with the Bruins, even as recently as August.
However, if he does not reach an agreement with the Bruins, Sweeney may ship him off for a decent return.
