Mikko Rantanen's contract talks with Avalanche hit significant stalemate

An NHL insider has given an update on contract negotiations between the Colorado Avalanche and star Mikko Rantanen, and the news is cause for some concern
If the Colorado Avalanche are looking to keep star player Mikko Rantanen, it seems the team will have to up it's offer. TSN Insider Pierre LeBrun has given an update on contract negotiation between the two sides, and he believes there's still a ton of work to be done.
"Often superstars of his ilk get signed a year out like we saw with Leon Draisaitl in Edmonton. Like we saw with Rantanen's teammate Nathan MacKinnon a couple of years ago," LeBrun said on TSN's Insider Trading segment. "But in this case, negotiations have yet to produce an extension. And I really don't think that anything is imminent at this moment. I think there's a gap here." - Colorado Hockey Now

Mikko Rantanen has just this season left on his current deal with the Colorado Avalanche at the current rate of $9.25 million per season. Rantanen will be getting a big raise, whether it's with the Avs or he waits until free agency to sign elsewhere. Colorado will need to loosen the purse string to ensure they don't lose him.
Colorado Avalanche Chris MacFarlane recently said he has he and the team have no concerns about getting Mikko Rantanen signed to an extension. Rantanen said he just wants to concentrate on his game and let his agent sort out the monetary details.
"Business will always take care of itself, and I'm just here to play hockey and get ready for another season and try to help my team win. That's my goal. My job is to try to help this team win every game."
In his report, Pierre LeBrun said the Colorado Avalanche may see captain Nathan MacKinnon's $12.6 million AAV as an internal cap, meaning no player will be paid higher than that. That, of course, all depends on whether they really want to keep Rantanen, and what he's willing to sign for.
