The Pittsburgh Penguins have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the past two years, and now it's clearly effecting one of their biggest stars.
Ever since the arrival of Sidney Crosby, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been a Stanley Cup Playoffs contender, with the team winning three Stanley Cup's during the tenure of Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. However, all three are now well into their 30's, and with the team missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the past few years, it appears as though frustration continues to mount.
After a dominant season opening loss against the Rangers, Malkin has opened up on those frustrations and how it's effected him in the past two seasons.
"I was so mad the last two years," Malkin said. "Missing the playoffs by one or two points. Terrible."
While this could hint that he may be looking to get out of Pittsburgh, his next comments suggest the exact opposite, with Geno seemingly revealing he won't retire until he tastes the post-season again.
"I love the playoffs so much," Malkin said. "I I need to feel it again. I couldn't leave if I never play in the playoffs again. Not until then."
Over the years, Malkin has played just as big a role in the success of the Pittsburgh Penguins as anyone else in the organization, and given the Stanley Cup Playoff runs that they've had, it's no shock he wants to feel that one more time. With captain Crosby having another incredible campaign in 2024/25, that is a genuine possibility this season, and while Malkin is focused on the playoffs, he could hit some serious milestones this year.
With two more goals and four more points he will surpass the 500 goal mark and the 1,300 point mark, and while he's already on the way to being a Hockey Hall of Famer, if he can pass those numbers and have another big year, this team could be back in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
